Guided tours of The Homewood Cemetery are offered by The Homewood Cemetery Historical Fund on Wednesdays and Saturdays from the first week of June through the first week of November.
2019 Tour Season
- JUNE – TAKING IT WITH YOU
“Taking It With You,” is a tour of Section 14 of The Homewood Cemetery, arguably Pittsburgh’s most prestigious neighborhood. Situated on the highest point of the cemetery, Section 14 is the permanent home of the Frick, Heinz, Benedum, Pitcairn, and Mellon families, as well as other prominent citizens of 19th and 20th century Pittsburgh. Section 14 features examples of late 19th and early 20th century architecture, ironwork, stained glass, sculpture, and landscape design of a quality that is hard to find in the living city.
JULY – ANGELS AND OBELISKS
“Angels & Obelisks” explores references and symbolism found in American memorial art and landscapes. The focus on symbolism allows for a discussion of the many different classes, cultures, and religions found among the 78,000+ people at rest within The Homewood Cemetery. From a turn of the century Chinese cemetery, to a forty foot pyramid, Angels and Obelisks offers a unique opportunity to examine some of Pittsburgh’s most intriguing works of art.
AUGUST – AUDACIOUS PIONEERS
“Audacious Pioneers; The Women of Section 14,” after receiving many accolades, is making a return for the 2019 Tour Season! As the final resting place of many prominent Pittsburgh families, Section 14 has often been featured in our tours, but the women at rest there have never been the main focus. Centering the tour on women allows for a wider discussion of Pittsburgh history, one that crosses lines of class and race in ways that our more traditional tours of Section 14 have yet to attempt.
